she's lost control

Alex and I watched "Control" last night. that bio-pic about Ian Curtis (lead singer of Joy Division). It was hard for me to feel any real sympathy for the guy in the end. I had watched another film a couple nights before called "24 Hour Party People" which was practically about the same thing. This film however was about Tony Wilson, the owner/creator of Factory records, the company which produced Joy Division, and then later New Order. In this movie, Curtis is portrayed as the character the audience feels almost sorry for. A musical genius misunderstood who finds this life too much and hangs himself in his home. I was actually sad after this.

But in "Control", we discover so much more about Curtis, and some of it isn't as "genius". He was married young, was in a post-punk band garnering a lot of attention, had a baby daughter, and a lover on the side, and oh yeah, epilepsy and all this happened before his life ended at 23 years old. The film made him seem a coward, and way too immature to have to deal with everything he created for himself so young. I still hold a lot of respect for how he shaped music history, but Ian Curtis the Man, is not someone I would look up to.

Collaboration celebration

So Scott Pilgrim and I have been tirelessly working on a collaboration for the past few days. We'd been talking about doing something together for a while, but we finally sat down and worked something out.
this is the end result.

It's considered a series but each piece is an individual as well. We went around town and Scott photographed all the urban areas, and we took the photos and traced them, keeping the buildings etc incomplete looking and simplified. Then we added the colour which we'd decided early on was going to be just a small smear somewhere on one of the structures. Then the figures were added by myself, using brush and ink. the figures were referenced from life and photos.

so here you have it. The most personal art I've produced in a long time, and I can't believe it turned out exactly as it was envisioned in my mind.

My city is evaporating

My grandparents house is full of awesome stuff. This wall paper and, shag carpet are part of my fondest childhood memories.

Art to come. Scanner doesn't work with my computer so I'll have to use my parents' which is slooooowwww, and unwelcoming, but I'll do it this week.

good things come to those who want and wait.
there's a lot of snow in London as of last night. and it's still going! I'm pretty amazed, and happy. Though I'd like to leave, and it looks very cold out. BUNDLE UP! you say... and you're right. I will.
Art will come soon. I just have to make sure there's a scanner located somewhere in this house....

Holy Mole-y!

So there goes the semester, and as glad as I am to see it go, I can't help reflect on all the good things that it brought. So, as I upload these sketchbook pages, my iTunes playing it's best choice of shuffle ever, I think about what next semester will hold...
I'm very optimistic about it and everything to come. ees gon'be gooood!!!

Also while school's out I'm gonna do all the things the first semester never allowed me to do because of school. like make tons of awesome different art, get a job, record some music, see my family, and eat sommmmeeee awesome foooood!!!

Computer Project Blues

so it isn't great but it's something.
We had to make a CD cover to a Starbucks introduction compilation CD. The genres were given at random, and I got western swing. Luckily western swing involves campy-ass cowboy crap. I left all the crop marks so you guys could see all the professionalism and stuff. amazing ain't it?

Things going slowly lately.... so excited for the break. make some REAL art for a change...

Oh the fonts I used on this cd cover are all from this sweet site called Dafont. they're mostly all free and there's tons to choose from. tons.
